Doris Day has died at the age of 97, her foundation has confirmed today. A post on her foundation’s website said the actress died at her home in Carmel Valley. The statement read: “Doris Day passed away early this morning at her Carmel Valley home, having celebrated her 97th birthday on April 3 of this year. Nearly 300 fans gathered in Carmel last month to celebrate Day’s birthday.

“She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed.”

Doris recently told Hollywood Reporter how she celebrated her last birthday, telling the publication she spent it with “dear old friends out of town”.
She added her and companions also enjoyed some “quiet dinners” together.
Doris was an American actress, singer and animal welfare activist.

The actress’ career included her role in 1953’s Calamity Jane and in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much three years later.
Doris went on to appear in comedies Pillow Talk in 1959 and Move Over, Darling in 1963, alongside Rock Hudson, who died in 1985.
Doris spoke out about her friendship with the latter to author Mark Griffin, according to USA’s Closer magazine.
She reportedly told him: “I honestly don’t think I taught him anything he didn’t already know after all his years in the business.”
On what they got up to off camera, she added: “Between scenes we’d walk and talk and laugh, and I guess our comedic timing grew out of our friendship and how naturally funny we were together.”
The actress first rose to fame as a singer in 1939.

She swiftly got her big break with her first hit recording titled Sentimental Journey aged just 15.
Doris won a series of awards throughout her successful career.
Back in 2004, the actress was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Four years later, she obtained the Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys.
In 2011, Doris released an album titled My Heart, which featured a compilation of songs she never released.

Proving to still be a hit with her fan base, the album went straight to number one in the UK.
Tributes have poured in for the Hollywood legend, with Star Trek star William Shatner tweeting: “Condolences to the family of Doris Day. She was the World’s Sweetheart and beloved by all. Que será, será!”
The Alchemist actor Paul Coelho shared the lyrics from Doris’ Secret Love, saying: “Once I had a secret love / That lived within the heart of me / All too soon my secret love / Became impatient to be free. I will miss you Doris Day, my first secret love.”
Antonio Banderas, George Takei, greg Proops, Luke Ecans and Kay Burley were also among those who paid their respects on social media.
George Takei wrote: “For those of us in my generation, Doris Day was synonymous with Hollywood icon.

“Rest in our hearts forever, Ms. Day,” he concluded.
In her 1976 book, Doris Day: Her Own Story, Doris opened up about her status as America’s Sweetheart and her failed marriages.
“I have the unfortunate reputation of being Miss Goody Two-Shoes, America’s Virgin and all that,” she wrote. “So I’m afraid it’s going to shock some people for me to say this, but I staunchly believe no two people should get married until they have lived together.”
