Feeling tired all of the time could be caused by not getting enough sleep, or by spending too much time at work. Tiredness that goes on for long periods of time isn’t normal, and may be caused by an underlying medical condition. But, taking some supplements may help you to feel more energetic, and less lethargic. You could lower your risk of feeling excessively tired by regularly taking iron supplements, it’s been claimed.
You could be at risk of an iron deficiency if you often feel sleepy and fatigued, revealed dietitian Gavin Van De Walle.
Without enough iron, your red blood cells struggle to deliver oxygen around the body, he said.
But taking iron supplements could help to correct a deficiency, and leave you feeling energetic.
“Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are the best ways to maintain your natural energy levels,” he wrote on medical website Healthline.
“But these things are not always possible, especially when balancing the demands of life. Fortunately, there are many supplements you can turn to for an energy boost.
“The body needs iron to make haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from your lungs to the organs and tissues throughout your body.
“Without adequate levels of iron, your red blood cells cannot effectively carry oxygen to the body’s tissues.
“In these cases, an iron supplement may be needed to correct a deficiency and avoid complications associated with iron deficiency anaemia, including fatigue.”
You could also increase your energy levels by regularly taking vitamin B12 supplements, added the dietitian.
Vitamin B12 is needed to keep the body’s nerves and blood cells healthy, and to protect against a type of anaemia that could leave you feeling fatigued.
Those most at risk of a vitamin B12 deficiency include the elderly, vegans, and those with a gastrointestinal disorder.
Other than a vitamin B12 or iron deficiency, your tiredness could be caused by stress or anxiety, said the NHS.
Anaemia, an underactive thyroid and sleep apnoea could also lead to feeling tired all of the time.
If you’ve been feeling tired for more than four weeks, it’s a good idea to speak to a doctor, said the NHS.
Making sure you get enough sleep could help to prevent you from feeling sleepy the next day.
Most adults need between six and nine hours of sleep every night to perform at their best the next day.
