Gaelle Nayo Ketchanke, 30, was attempting to lift a personal best 110kg when her left arm suffered the devastating injury.
It was Ketchanke’s third and final attempt to lift the heavy load in the women’s 76kg category.
She started the move well as she moved the bar to behind her head, ahead of the final push.
However, as the Cameroon-born athlete went to push through her legs in a squatting position her left arm could not handle the pressure.
The crowd screamed in terror as Ketchanke fell to the ground holding her left arm in agony.
Her elbow bent in the wrong direction and caused a double break.
There are also reports of a dislocated elbow.
Ketchanke was rushed straight to hospital for emergency surgery.
However, she still won the bronze media in Georgia for completing her 103kg opener.
Ketchanke had been expected to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
But her participation is now in serious doubt given the severity of the injury.
Ketchanke took to Instagram after coming out of the operating theatre.
“I’m coming out of these European Championships not in the best of ways, with a 107kg wrenching elbow injury after winning the bronze medal at 103kg,” she wrote.
“I received a lot of support messages that made me feel good and we are waiting for my return to France to do further tests.
“I want to thank the medical and technical staff of the Federation who responded very quickly and who are by my side.
“My coaches and my colleagues from the France team. I will come back to you for news.”
The gruesome scenes come just days after a gymnast suffered a sickening double-leg break after a somersault went wrong.
Samantha Cerio was competing for Auburn University in the regional finals of the 2019 Gymnastics Championships in America when she attempted a handspring double front in her floor routine.
Cerio sprinted into the approach and looked in good shape to land the complicated manoeuvre.
But, as the shocking footage shows, her legs collapsed on impact and she is left writing on the floor in pain.
The crowd can be heard gasping as a doctor rushes to her side, where they find the stricken gymnast having dislocated both knees and broken both of her legs.
